A 3-year-old boy admitted to St. Mary's Medical Center Monday afternoon with injuries reportedly consistent with shaken baby syndrome has been declared brain dead, authorities said this afternoon.
The boy is being kept on life support while officials determine if his organs will be donated, though his time of death is officially listed as 2 p.m. today, Vanderburgh County Coroner Don Erk said.
His parents are being held on preliminary charges related to the beating of his twin 3-year-old sister, though charges related to the boy's death will be added pending the completion of the investigation, said Sheriff Eric Williams.
**My heart is very heavy as I post this here. My thoughts go to his siblings and in his family. I cannot imagine why someone would do this. Though it is times like these where I hold my children a little closer, extend my patience a little farther, and pray for those this little one left behind.

A mother and father are in jail while authorities investigate abuse of four of their children, including a three-year-old boy hospitalized Monday with life-threatening injuries, according to a news release issued today by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities said the three-year-old boy is on life support and appears to be the victim of shaken baby syndrome. A doctor who examined another of the children, a 3-year-old girl, said it appeared she had been "savagely beaten," the release said.
The parents, Amanda Brooks, 33, and Terry Lay, 40, were being held this afternoon at the Vanderburgh County Jail on bonds of $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Brooks is facing preliminary charges of battery of a child under 14 and neglect of a dependent. Lay is facing preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent.
**This is the first article that appeared on our sibling site, Courier and Press. As I said above, my mood is very tempered right now at this news. I am looking into any type of donation for the children I can find. If I find anything I will of course post it here and Courier and Press.

Update: The 3 year old boy has been declared brain dead and they are keeping him on life support until they find out about organ donation. This is so sad and so disgusting that someone could do this to little children.

| I get chills reading things like this and wondering what the poor children had to go through in their short, sad life. My thoughts and prayers go out to the other children and loved ones of the family.

| We can all say that there are times when our kids drive us nuts. I love my girls and would never think about harming them in anyway. I don't spank and I don't hit. I have yelled, which I am working on. > My secretary and I were talking about this baby boy yesterday. Yes, he is a baby. A 3 year old can not stand up against an adult. She began to weep with why. Her response was God gives people babies who treat them this way and who really don't want them and then there are so many others out there that try desapartly to have their own children. > Why? It really makes me feel so much anger for people who harm little ones. I am amazed the number of parents who scream at their children and yank them around in public. I think, if you do that in front of others, what do you do at home. > I think that there are so many people who would gladly give up their children, but it seems to be so hard. You have to give reasons why, give your information. Let's make it easier for people to drop off kids. Police station, fire station, hospital....all you have to do is give some health history. > I will get off my soapbox now.

Yesterday, I cried when I heard this news. I was truly sickened when the father's friend and family tried to defend him on the news as a kind and compassionate man.
Now, though, the anger has set in. For someone to beat their child into a coma, and so savagely that he dies from those injuries takes the most evil assets in a personality that I can think of.
I called the lead detective on the case. There is no fund set up for the remaining siblings who remain in CPS.
My heart goes out to those children who lost their brother to their own parents. Part of me starts thinking at times like these, you should have a license to have kids.

| I am sicken and helpless thinking of this child. Apparently this woman has 4 children, all of which showed signs of abuse. How someone can someone tottally lose control like this to a 3 year old child is beyond me. There are thousands of wonderful families that would love to have taken these children in and help. It is too late. The damage has already been done. I only can hope and pray that the other 3 children will have a loving family to help heal them and bright futures.

| still thinking about this.... even though this child was only 3 years old, it still is reasonably a lot of weight. Imagine the force and strenght it takes to shake a 3 year old to this extent. This was not a moment where someone could just "snap."
